The big shadow is half a creative choice, half a fiddle to avoid drawing the second glass (it always comes different from the first one).
I made a lot of sketches and two serious (and missed) attempts before this one, but I'm not so courageous as
Suzanne: I haven't published them.
I've made this with
France's stratospheric portraits somewhere in mind (color on the back is a little homage).
Thank you both!
Stunning results! oh goodness, thank you for the mention, Miguel. Your darkened left side is very dramatic, and makes the other half even more interesting to look at.
ReplyDeleteI also love your choice of paper for this.
Were you happy with the resemblance?
Muuuchas gracias, France.
ReplyDeleteI was about to end the drawing and feeling quite happy with the resemblance when Fabio (my son, 11 y.o) came near me and said:-"Great, you've drawn grandpa!!" And after a few seconds of solid silence:-"Ehhh, I'm joking, it's really you!!".
So I must say the resemblance is ok (actually, my hair and beard are usually trimmed).
The paper was cheap recycled sheets I use to buy separately.
Great work. I like that shadow too, gives a lot of interest to the portrait.
ReplyDeleteI too like the paper you used and the 'dark side'. I love the addition of red.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
The intensity of your gaze is overwhelming - I can't imagine what it must be like to focus that on yourself. Beautiful line work.
ReplyDeleteGreat work. I am quite in awe of the sketches here on your blog.
ReplyDeleteWhat an intense self portrait. Really stunning!
ReplyDeletethis is way cool, i like that you did it Wagonized-style
ReplyDeleteYour self portrait has an important feeling, to me. Not in a pompous way, because it has simplicity too. Oh, I'm not sure what I mean, except that it seems to me you have done something to be proud of here.
ReplyDeletePowerful. very nice.

This is wonderful Miguel. . . intense and powerful!!
ReplyDeleteThis is just fantastic. I love the whole dramatic feel of your portrait.
ReplyDeleteThanks Miguel...but I'm not sure if it was courage or stupidity :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful portrait! The way you allowed a the shadow to envelope an entire side of your face is really striking. I love it.
I also want to let you know that I've been sharing some of your work with my students this past week as they work on composition in their sketchbooks. Your journal pages are really inspiring them.
I love this portrait Miguel...so intense, just stunning!
