La Festa Major de Gràcia

15 de agosto. La Festa Major de Gràcia es una de las celebraciones más características de Barcelona. Me doy una pequeña vuelta el día de la inauguración. Muchos de los que viven por aquí me dicen que estoy loco pero como nunca he venido me acerco hasta la plaza con la osadía del ignorante. Son las 11:30. Hay mucha gente y va llegando mucha más, la inauguración será a las 12. Hay una exposición de material de la feria y me meto a verla. Me deslumbra este dragón y me pongo a dibujarlo.

Luego en casa sabré por internet que es el Drac de Gràcia, personaje bastante importante de estas fiestas. En este enlace se le puede ver en plena faena.

August 15. The Festa Major de Gràcia  is one of Barcelona's most characteristic celebrations. I take a small tour on the day of the inauguration. Many people living here tell me I'm crazy but I've never seen this and I come here with the audacity of the ignorant. It's 11:30. There are many people and lots more coming, the opening will be at noon. There is an exhibition of material used at the festivities, I go in to take a look. I get amazed by this dragon and I draw it. Later at home I will learn on the internet that it's the Drac de Gràcia, a very important character on these festivity. A las 12 menos 5 me echan para cerrar, pero casi he terminado el dibujo, le daré color en casa. La plaza está ahora abarrotada de gente. A mi derecha veo una especie de plataforma cerrada al público y donde sólo hay un par de fotógrafos. Me subo a ella, nadie me para. Desde aquí puedo dibujar cómodamente lo que va desfilando ante mi. Hay gegants, trabucaires, castellers, y toda clase de grupos que bailan, tiran cohetes y encienden petardos. Mucho ruido, mucho color (mucho calor) y muchas ganas de pasarlo bien. Sale también el Drac y otras figuras presentes en la exposición, ahora me explico por qué me han echado.

At 5 to noon everybody is invited to leave the exhibition because it's closing. So soon? Well, I've almost finished my drawing, I'll put color at home. The square is fully crowded now. On the right side I see some kind of platform closed to the public. There are just a couple of photographers over. I get on it, no one stops me. From here I can draw easily what goes parading before me. There are gegants, trabucaires, castellers, and all kinds of people dancing, shooting fireworks and throwing firecrackers. Lots of noise, lots of color (lots of heat) and a real mood for fun. There's also the Drac and the other figures of the exhibition. Now I understand why I've been thrown out so soon.


La tribuna se ha ido llenado como era natural. Vuelvo a casa. Todas las calles están llenas de gente (vaya, esto lo cantaba Mina) y forradas literalmente de decoraciones fantásticas que cubren portales y balcones. Miles de guirnaldas impiden ver el cielo. Todo es excesivo, el ruido, el color, la gente... pero me encanta. Tendré que volver unas cuantas veces más para cansarme como los que me previnieron.

The platform has been getting full of people. I go back home. The streets are crowded (mmm, these words remind me some old tune). The doorways and balconies are covered with fantastic decorations. Thousands of garlands cover the sky. Everything is excessive, noise, color, people ... but I love it. I'll have to come back a few more times to get tired as the people that warned me.
