Sevilla #3

Como es natural, hicimos un pequeño hueco para cerveceos, tapeos y terraceos varios. En realidad casi todos los dibujos ya publicados sobre este viaje fueron hechos uniendo obligación y devoción, o mejor dicho, devoción dibujera y devoción etílica. Y solidaridad con los compañeros de la hostelería que tienen que hacer caja, eso también. De arriba a abajo: terraza de nombre olvidado en la plaza de San Andrés (la del pelo rojo es quien te imaginas), Los Patitos en Coria, La Carbonería, y los dos últimos son del Levies, poco que ver con vaqueros.

Of course we gave some space for bars and beers. Actually almost all the drawings of this series were made this way. From top to bottom: an uncertain bar at Plaza de San Andrés (the redheaded woman is the one you guess), Los Patitos in Coria, La Carbonería and the last 2 were made at Levies, nothing to do with blue jeans.

Sevilla #2

Otro poco de Sevilla.
El primer dibujo es el Pabellón Mudéjar del Parque de María Luisa. El color del cielo no fue tomado del natural, no, que estaba plomizo y poco andaluz. El segundo es de la Plaza del Altozano, al principio de Triana. Hacía un bonito sol ese día pero me dio pereza poner color y así se quedó.

Some more Seville.
The first drawing is the Pabellón Mudéjar at Parque de María Luisa. The color of the sky is not from life, no, it was greyish and not so andalusian. The second is the El segundo es of Plaza del Altozano, at the beginning of Triana. There was a beautiful sun that day but I was too lazy for coloring and that's how I ended it.

Sevilla #1

En mayo pasado estuvimos unos días en Sevilla. Fue un viaje memorable: Inma, Aurora, Celia, Manu... y Sevilla, claro, Sevilla... Los dibujos son (de arriba a abajo) las Setas de la Encarnación, un experimento fracasado (mi dibujo, no las Setas), un poquito de Triana, y La Giralda of course, con mi toque personal estilo Guillermo Tell absolutamente no deseado pero qué le vamos a hacer...

Last may we went to Seville. An unforgetable trip. Inma, Aurora, Celia, Manu... and Seville, of course, Seville... The drawings are (from top to bottom) the mushrooms of La Encarnación, a missed experiment (my drawing, not the mushrooms), a bit of Triana, and La Giralda (how couln't I?) with my personal touch at the top William Tell style, absolutely not wanted but nothing to do...

Sant Jordi

Día Internacional del Libro, en conmemoración de las muertes de Cervantes y Shakespeare el 23 de abril de 1616 (aunque no sólo no murieron el mismo día como se ha creído durante siglos, sino que mira tú por dónde, ninguno de los dos murió tal día, que el uno murió el 22 y el otro el 2 de mayo) y fiesta grande en Barcelona con epicentro en Las Ramblas. Libros, rosas, y mucha, mucha, mucha gente.

World Book Day, in commemoration of the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare, both happened the 23th april, 1616 (even if not only they didn't die on the same day as commonly accepted for centuries, but none of them did it on that day: one died the 22th and the other on the 2nd may) and also a big fiesta in Barcelona with epicentre in Las Ramblas. Books, roses and many, many, many people.

Ahí vienen. Más rápidas que el sonido, no llegaré a oír la descarga.

La del novato es de salva, mejor para él. El bigotes ha fallado, que se joda.

Qué coñazo.

Debería haber dejado que me vendaran los ojos.

A veces mi mente deambula sola e inventa cosas como la de arriba. Me pasa a menudo en la ducha. A veces (las menos) logro llegar al papel antes de que se me olviden. 
A veces mi mano deambula sola e inventa cosas como la de abajo. La cabeza va por un lado y la pluma (pincel en este caso) por otro, se cruzan pero no se acompañan. Lo que sigue es la página 98 de mi cuaderno para todo menos la calle.

Sometimes my mind wanders alone and invents things like this one above. It often happens in the shower. Sometimes (a few) I reach the paper before Ive forgotten them.

Sometimes mi hand wanders alone and invent things like this one below. My head goes on one side and my  the pen (brush in this case) on nother , they run into each other but don't walk together. The drawing is the page 98 of my everyday sketchbook.

Lugares que ya no existen

Esto son un par de dobles páginas de mi cuaderno de garabatos, el que uso todos los días, casi no saco a la calle y no tiene ni un dibujo del natural (como no sea de la tele), tan sólo bocetos de trabajo, experimentos y zarandajas varias. Como por ejemplo esta serie de imágenes recordadas de la casa de mis abuelos,  en la Colonia de Mahou (o "del Mahou", como solían llamarla sus habitantes), un sitio que frecuenté mucho en épocas remotas y que fue derribado completamente en los primeros ochenta para construir bloques de pisos.
En flickr hay imágenes tamaño legible para curiosos y aventureros.

La semana pasada le mostré estas páginas a mi padre y las reconoció inmediatamente. Empezó a hacerme alguna corrección pero luego cayó en la cuenta de que mientras mis recuerdos son de los años '70, los suyos habían quedado fijados incluso 20 años antes, en la época anterior a mi nacimiento y a algunas reformas que yo conocí ya realizadas. Luego fue reconstruyendo todo mientras se maravillaba por no haber conservado en su memoria las imágenes más recientes sino otras mucho más remotas.



Places that do not exist anymore

These are a pair of spreads of my scribble sketchbook, the one I use everyday, I almost never take out from home and that has not even one drawing from life (from TV at the most). It has just sketches for work, experiments and silly things as this series of images from memory of the house of my grandparents, a place I used to go in remote times and that was demolished in the first eighties to build apartment blocks.

There are some images at a legible size (in spanish) on flickr for daring curious.

Last week I showed this pages to my father and he recognized the places immediately. He started proposing corrections but suddenly he realized that, while my memories were all from the 70's, his had remained fixed even 20 years before, in the period previous to my birth and to some alterations that I knew already made. Then he started reconstructing everything, wondering at how he couldn't remember the most recent images but others much older.

Pa Negre

Exceptio probat regulam

Creo que nunca había dibujado a Roberta.
Esto lo hice hace un par de meses en una escapada que hicimos a Sant Feliu de Guíxols. No suelo dibujar a mi familia, tampoco a mis amigos no dibujantes (y parece que no soy el único), por eso este dibujo es la excepción que confirma la regla.



I gues I had never drawn Roberta.
I did this a couple months ago in a little trip to Sant Feliu de Guíxols. I don't use to draw my family. Neither the friends who do not draw (and seems I'm not the only one), it's because of this that this drawing is the exception that proves the rule.

De taxis, tejados, helenismo y canciones antiguas

Dibujé esto allá por enero desde la misma ventana de otras ocasiones como ésta de hace un año  y ésta del pasado octubre. En este caso mirando hacia abajo donde hay una permanente plantación de taxis que a veces llega a ser como el doble de los que se ven en el dibujo.
Transcribo lo que pone en la página derecha:

Los taxistas son así, llueva o nieve, en diciembre o en abril, o algo así decía una canción jurásica de Teo Cardalda que no sé por qué me viene a la cabeza en este momento dado que él hablaba de tejados y no de taxistas, pero suena parecido y encaja sin esfuerzo aunque es bastante más prosaico, tirando a poligonero que no es lo mismo que poligonal aunque tiene las mismas raíces helénicas un tanto difuminadas eso sí. Como en la canción de Teo —¿Teodoro, Teófilo, Teodulfo, Teodomiro, Teofrasto? en cualquier caso es un nombre de raíces helénicas— yo miro desde mi ventana y veo taxistas donde él ve tejados. Yo también veo tejados, pero yo dibujo mientras que él compone canciones y yo los tejados ya los tengo dibujados más de una vez. Así que he bajado la vista al suelo y hete aquí...



Of taxies, roofs, helenism and ancient songs
 I drew this in january from the same window of other occasions like this one year ago  and this from the last october. In this case looking downwards where there is a permanent taxi plantation which sometimes gets about double size of what seen in the drawing.

I can't translate properly the transcription of the text on the right page. Too many private jokes, sorry.

Mi 41º cuaderno (de bolsillo #16)

Este cuaderno vivió en mi bolsillo desde el 24 de agosto de 2012 hasta el 28 de abril de 2013. Todos los dibujos (aparte algún que otro garabato de mi imaginación) fueron hechos del natural en Barcelona, Clermont-Ferrand, Jávea y Sevilla.

This sketchbook lived in my pocket from august 24, 2012 to april 28, 2013. All the drawings (except a few scribbles from mind) were made on location in Barcelona, Clermont-Ferrand, Jávea and Sevilla.

23 de febrero, día de oscuras conmemoraciones, un buen día para dibujar.
Los talleres de Barcelona Dibuixa van de museos. A mi grupo le ha tocado el MNAC.
February 23, a day of dark memories, a good day for drawing.
Barcelona Dibuixa workshops go today to the museums and my group goes to the MNAC.

Durante la primera hora nos damos un paseo por la Colección de Arte Moderno. Los alumnos se desperdigan por las salas y tratando de seguir lo que hace cada uno de ellos sólo tengo tiempo para hacer esta pequeña escena.

During the first hour we take a stroll by the Modern Art Collection. Students scatter along the halls and trying to see what they are drawing I just have the time for making this little scene.

Después vamos a dibujar la cúpula del Palacio Nacional de Montjuïc que es donde está ubicado el Museo. Yo hago un boceto de uno de los ángulos. Estoy de pie mirando hacia arriba y forzando el cuello pero mi mano hoy va sola. Según voy dibujando ya pienso cómo colorearé. Como sé que no me dará tiempo hago una foto para fijar el fantástico juego de luces. Aunque aún no está terminado, ya lo haré más tarde en casa, de alguna manera sé que el dibujo ha salido bien.
Tengo la sensación de que hoy ha sido de esos días en que aunque no lo sepan, mis alumnos me han enseñado más que yo a ellos.

Afterwards, we go for drawing the Palacio Nacional de Montjuïc, the building that holds the Museum. I make a sketch of one of the corners, I'm standing forcing my neck looking up but my hand today works by itself. As I'm drawing I think how I'll put the color. As I know I will not have time enough, I take a photo to fix the awesome play of light and shadow. Even if it's not finished and it will be later at home when I'll do it, I know somehow that the drawing has gone right.
I have the feeling that today is one of these days that, even if they don't know, my students have taught me much more than I have taught them.

Otro remake de un dibujo de hace tiempo.
Another remake of a drawing I made some time ago

La idea es de 2005. Como era un poco complicada hice unas guías con lápiz azul antes de la tinta. El tamaño real es más o menos el de una galleta.

The idea is from 2005. As it was a bit complicated I made some guidelines with blue pencil before inking. The real size is more or less one biscuit.

Alguos meses después hice esta versión en papel. No me interesaba tanto la violencia del momento capturada en la primera versión sino las consecuencias, por eso el dibujo refleja lo que ocurre unos segundos después.
Some months after I made this version on paper. I was not so interested on the violence of the moment captured on the first scribble but on the consequences. It's because of this that the drawing shows what happens some seconds after. 

Algún listillo quizás aprecie más que vagas influencias del estilo de Ron Cobb, uno de los santos de mi panteón particular (más infromación sobre él aquí).
Some smart ass maybe could appreciate more than vague influences of Ron Cobb, one of the saints of my particular pantheon (more about him here). 

En el otoño pasado hice esta versión en el ordenador con masas en vez de tramado. 

On the last autumn I made another version on the computer with masses instead of crosshatching.

El sábado pasado nos reunimos para el 39º Sketchcrawl en el 31º Salón del Cómic de Barcelona.
Last saturday we met for the 39º Sketchcrawl at the 31º Salón del Cómic de Barcelona.


La cosa empezó con una conferencia a cargo de Guy Delisle.
It all started with a lecture by Guy Delisle.


Luego me dediqué a dibujar cosplayers. La de la izquierda es Mar que iba de Green Arrow, la de la derecha, Noelia que iba de Poison Ivy.
Afterwards I drew some cosplayers. On the left side, Mar as Green Arrow, on the right side, Noelia as Poison Ivy.


Hice un retrato a Liniers mientras dedicaba libros, luego me lo firmó. La de la derecha es Carol que iba de Black Cat.
I made a portrait of Liniers while he dedicated some books, then he signed it for me. On the right side, Carol as Black Cat.


Por la tarde hubo una mesa redonda sobre cuadernos de viaje con Liniers, Sagar, Florent Chavouet y Guy Delisle.
In the afternoon we went to a panel discussion about travel sketchbooks with Liniers, Sagar, Florent Chavouet and Guy Delisle.

Otro remake de un dibujo de hace tiempo.

Another remake of a drawing I made some time ago.

La idea es de finales de 2004. La garabateé del tirón en mi cuaderno.

The idea is from the end of 2004. I scribbled it immediately. on my sketchbook.

Siempre pensé que habría una versión definitiva pero no hice nada hasta finales de 2012.

I always thought there should be a definitive version but I did nothing till the end of 2012.

...y redibujé en el ordenador, como siempre del modo más "analógico" posible.

Encuentro dibujero en el Museo Marítimo

El pasado 16 de marzo, con motivo de la reapertura tras una larga temporada de acondicionamiento y restauración, el Museo Marítimo de Barcelona tuvo la gentileza de poner a nuestra disposición su sede para un encuentro de dibujantes. Hubo182 inscritos, todo un éxito. El principal punto de atención era por supuesto la réplica de la Galera Real. Debimos de dibujarla todos.

Last march 16, because of the reopening after a long time of improvement and restoration works, the Museo Maritimo de Barcelona graciously let us its venue for a drawing meeting. There were 182 people, a real success. The main spot was of course the replica of the Galera Real. I guess all of us drew her.

El árbol de los frutos (digamos) de oro

Dicen que España es el sitio ese donde uno trabaja y los demás supervisan. La cosa adquiere un significado especial cuando uno dibuja por trabajo y los demás acompañan por pura diversión. Es lo que pasó hace unas semanas cuando Víctor tuvo que ir a hacer un dibujo de los Pabellones Güell para un libro en el que está trabajando, y unos cuantos decidimos ir con él. Para supervisar (digamos).
Como el chico suele hacerlo bastante bien y había poco que supervisar, nos pusimos también nosotros a dibujar. A mí me atrajo un detalle de la fachada por su curioso diseño de ladrillos y baldosines. La figura alta de la izquierda se supone que era —según alguien me contó de la historia del guarda— el árbol de las manzanas de oro mencionado en el poema L'Atlàntida de Jacint Verdaguer. Algún detalle debió de perderse en las sucesivas versiones porque horas después, al investigar el texto, las manzanas resultaron ser naranjas.

The golden fruits (let's say) tree
They say that Spain is that place where one works while the other supervise. This takes on a special meaning when one draws as a work and the other accompany him for fun. That is what happened some weeks ago when Víctor had to draw the Güell Pavilions for a book on which he is working, and some of us decided to go with him. Mainly to supervise (let's say).
As the guy usually do quite well and there was not so much to supervise, we also started drawing. A detail of the facade took my attraction because of its curious design made of bricks and tiles. The tall figure on the left side was supposed to be —as someone told me from the guard's tale— the golden apple tree mentioned on Jacint Verdaguer's poem L'Atlàntida. Some details must got lost in the succeeding versions because hours after, taking a look at the text, apples ended up being oranges.

56 hombres, 59 mujeres, 115 ombligos.

La idea original viene de un garabato improvisado en un pequeño cuaderno a finales de 2004. Entonces no solía dibujar tan a menudo en cuadernos como ahora pero siempre llevaba uno encima... por lo que pudiera pasar, verbigracia esto:
The original idea comes from a scribble improvised on a little sketch at the end of 2004. I didn't use to draw on sketchbooks as often as I do now  but I always had one with me... just in case, for example this:



En el otoño de 2012 lo volví a dibujar de nuevo en el ordenador. No hice bocetos previos.
Como el tamaño original es bastante grande he aquí unos cuantos detalles, de arriba a abajo y de izquierda a derecha.
In the autumn of 2012 I drew it again on the computer. I didn't make previous sketches.
