Drawing with Nina

Drawing with Nina
This summer Nina Johansson came to Barcelona in order to draw the  Sagrada Familia for a book on which she is working (and I look forward to see).  One afternoon some of us joined her for some sketching. She was working the surrounding area and not inside the temple. I drew this food stand that was making a killing selling drinks to the tourists.
While drawing I realized that there is a kind of new generation of tourists who have joined  on the last years with the good old european, american and japanese people. I heard many of them speaking russian (maybe polish or ukrainian). Oriental people speaking with new non-japanese sounds (maybe chinese or korean). And latin people who speak another spanish, all them very well dressed (or at least with famous brands). In many cases, I thought, the same countries from which immigrants come to us trying to make a living.
I was engrossed in this when a french family appeared (maybe belgian or canadian). The boy was chasing pigeons and I remembered that a few days before in Santo Domingo, watching the kids doing the same, I realized that there were not many consoles, or swings, or balls, or rackets around to play with, almost nothing but pigeons... and I thought kids around here have other lures to give a damn about pigeons. And guess what, the french kid starts chasing these critters. Just to take my opposite, I'd bet.
The evening with Nina actually began at lunchtime and continued until past midnight. She did not stop drawing at any moment, she said that everything could serve for the book, from the beer label to the fried calamari. All her drawings looked gorgeous as she made them.
Till next time, Nina! (Next summer, perhaps?)

Evening sketchcrawl

Evening-Sketchcrawl #2
The custom of organizing a sketchcrawl every saturday has quietly sprouted this summer. We never are  a big group, you come if you can and sometimes we have cancelled it because almost anybody could be present. Sometimes we make it in the morning, some others in the afternoon..., in this case it was in the evening. We went to the bar at the terrace of hotel America, in the corner between and Enric Granados and Provença which has good views over Barcelona. I grabbed my beer and went near the railing to draw this view of Enric Granados street up to the Tibidabo.

Evening-Sketchcrawl #1
Later, after dinner, we scattered along Paseo de Gracia each one at their favorite point. A few of us stayed at Casa Fuster, a building that I had wanted to draw for a longtime.

We gathered again after midnight where we use to.

Back to Vic
The first weekend after Santo Domingo I went to Vic with some fellow sketchers from Barcelona. We met the the group that has grown in Vic around the Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny.

Vic again #1
We started drawing El Sucre, an old sugar factory now transfromed into a cultural center.
Very drawgenic I'd say, I think the mix of styles and materials is quite harmonic.

Vic again #2
Then we went downtown, to draw the Plaza Mayor, a place that I specially love. Because I find it really beautiful, because of the ground floor, because of the market... It's a special thing to see how the market get dismantled slowly unveiling all the facades and leaves you in a sort of timeless environment, between medieval and romantic.
The first drawing was a quick sketch which took me a couple minutes and left me somewhat dissatisfied becauset I just never find the balance between ease and precipitation, so...

Vic again #3
...I changed place and made a slower one (it took me some more than half an hour) facing opposite to  the drawing I did a while ago from the center of the square.

Vic again #4
Then we went to eat in Seva and after the meal to take out again our sketchbooks.
I made this view of the garden that includes portraits of Víctor and Isaac.
A good day.
